History

Fort Dodge, Iowa traces its roots to individuals of Swedish heritage who began planning for their religious future. During the past 130 years, the congregation has had several church homes, numerous pastors, and at least three different names; nevertheless, Grace continues to celebrate its heritage and plan for the future.

The church is located at 211 South Ninth Street, in the midst of Fort Dodge’s historic Oak Hill district. The addition of a new entry in 2004 made the building fully accessible to all. A new parking lot helps accommodate the needs of the growing congregation.

Each week, worshipers celebrate God’s love in both traditional and contemporary services. Including music and the arts in worship is an important tradition for all Lutherans. The beautiful imported art glass windows in the sanctuary are a testament to the congregation’s past support of the arts. The church’s worship leaders continue to use diverse styles of sacred music and drama as vital tools to proclaim God’s word.

Love of children is one of the cornerstones of Christian teaching. A stone carving on the building’s west side proudly proclaims “Let the children come unto me.” Grace offers opportunities for education and fellowship for children of all ages. Frequent community concerts nurture aspiring musicians.

Grace continues its long tradition of helping others. Quilters make more than 100 blankets each year to assist those in need; on-going food and clothing drives benefit local agencies and ELCA needs. Members and friends assist a group of Honduran children with educational costs.

All are invited to share as Grace continues to celebrate the greatest heritage of all: the gift of God’s son – a gift that assures the future.
